Perplexity Search Optimization is the practice of structuring your content and distribution so that Perplexity's retrieval pipeline finds, ranks, and cites your pages and brand mentions when buyers ask category-relevant questions.

How Perplexity actually retrieves

Perplexity's retrieval combines a high-recall web index (similar to a traditional search engine) with a re-ranker that prioritizes pages with clear, dense, factual answers. Once it has 5–10 candidate pages, the answer model synthesizes a response and surfaces 3–5 citations. To be cited, your page needs to:

  • Match the query vector clearly (specific, on-topic content beats broad pillar pages)
  • Have a definitive answer in the first 200 words
  • Include structured data (FAQ schema, Article schema) and clean HTML
  • Be hosted on a domain with category authority (as measured by Perplexity's signals, which lean heavily on link graphs and citation reuse)

The PSO content recipe

  1. Lead with the answer. First sentence answers the question. Don't bury it.
  2. Quantify. Specific numbers, percentages, and benchmarks get cited at 2–3x the rate of vague claims.
  3. Cite your sources. Pages that link out to authoritative sources get rewarded — they look like reference material, which Perplexity favors.
  4. Add FAQ schema. JSON-LD FAQPage dramatically improves citation eligibility for question-style queries.
  5. Keep it scannable. H2/H3 structure, short paragraphs, lists. The re-ranker likes clean structure.

The Reddit angle

Perplexity heavily cites Reddit threads, especially for "best X for Y" queries. Having authentic Reddit threads where your product is mentioned in context is one of the highest-ROI PSO inputs you can build. This is one of the reasons we treat Reddit and GEO as a single discipline.

Measurement
